Immediate answer: do not send money because a job agent calls it refundable, GST, insurance, courier, GPS activation or ID-card cost. Ask why an applicant must fund the process and verify the role with the legal employer through an independent channel.
The escalation ladder
Advance-fee schemes often begin with an amount small enough to feel recoverable. After the first transfer, a new condition appears: material cannot be dispatched, salary is blocked, tax is pending or a refund requires another payment. The earlier payment becomes psychological pressure to continue.
Worked example: ₹620 for registration is followed by ₹2,500 for security and ₹5,100 for delivery. Total risk was hidden at the first step. A promise that every amount will be returned by the courier is only a promise from the party requesting money.
Common labels do not prove a charge
- Registration: ask for the employer’s published hiring policy.
- Courier or material: ask why the employer cannot account for its logistics.
- GST: a tax label without a verifiable invoice and legal supplier is not proof.
- Security: pressure to secure wages or a slot needs independent verification.
- Refund: never pay more merely to recover the first transfer.
Documents are not enough
Offers can include letterheads, stamps, ID cards and copied addresses. Check control: is the message sent from an official domain? Is the vacancy listed or confirmed? Does the beneficiary name make sense? Can you review terms without pressure?
What to say
You do not need to debate. Say: “I will not make an advance payment. I will verify the vacancy through the company’s official contact.” Stop if the person threatens, rushes or changes the fee description. Preserve evidence rather than exposing more information.
Follow the beneficiary, not the label
Before any legitimate transaction, the beneficiary name, invoice issuer and contracting entity should make sense together. A payment to an unrelated individual is not repaired by a PDF carrying a corporate logo. Do not accept explanations that accounts rotate because of limits, maintenance or a manager’s absence without independent company confirmation.
A QR code hides details until scanned. Scanning is not the same as paying, but do not enter a PIN merely to “receive” money. In ordinary UPI use, the PIN authorises an outgoing action; a caller who says otherwise may be exploiting confusion.
Why sunk cost changes decisions
After paying once, people naturally want to recover the first amount. A fraudster can frame the next payment as the only way to save what is already lost. Pause and calculate future risk separately. Money already sent should not make another unsupported transfer more sensible.
Invoice and tax checks
A GST number or invoice layout should not be treated as a magic authenticity test. Verify the supplier identity, purpose, amount and relationship to the job. Hiring and purchase are different transactions. An applicant should understand why they have become the customer of a supposed employer.
Pressure language map
- “Only two slots” attempts to remove comparison time.
- “Truck is waiting” converts logistics into urgency.
- “Salary is frozen” uses expected income as leverage.
- “Manager will refund today” shifts proof into the future.
- “Do not tell the bank it is for a job” asks you to hide context.
FAQ
What if the recruiter refunds a small test amount? It may be used to build confidence for a larger payment; continue independent verification.
Is a courier fee always fraud? The name alone is not decisive, but a job applicant being pressured to fund materials before verification is a strong stop signal.
Can I pay by credit card for protection? A dispute mechanism is not permission to enter an unsupported transaction. Verify first.
Should I delete the chat? No. Preserve it if you may need to report the incident.
A simple household rule
Before anyone in the household pays for a job opportunity, ask another person to review the employer, beneficiary and official application route. A second reader is less affected by urgency and sunk cost. Agree in advance that no one will transfer money during the same call or chat in which the charge is introduced. This small delay creates room to check the claim independently.
Editorial judgment
Applicants for low-skill remote work can be especially vulnerable to sunk-cost pressure. The protective rule must be simple: no advance payment to unlock work, materials, wages or a refund.
