Paid a Fake Job Recruiter? What to Do Next in India

फर्जी जॉब रिक्रूटर को पैसे भेज दिए? अब क्या करें

Stop further payment, contact the bank or payment provider, call 1930 for financial cyber fraud, file at cybercrime.gov.in, preserve evidence and secure exposed accounts.

Evidence and a timeline organised before a cyber-fraud report
Editorial responsibility: KaamCheck India. Independent education; no employer affiliation, vacancy or recovery guarantee.

Immediate answer: do not send a final “release,” “refund” or “cancellation” fee. Contact your bank or payment provider immediately. For financial cyber fraud in India, Government sources identify helpline 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in.

First 30 minutes

  1. Stop communicating long enough to prevent another pressured payment.
  2. Call the bank, card issuer, wallet or UPI provider through its official app, site or card number. State that the transaction is suspected fraud and ask about recall, hold or dispute steps.
  3. Call 1930 when the incident is financial cyber fraud. Keep transaction references ready.
  4. Change passwords for any account whose credentials were shared. Contact the telecom provider if a SIM or OTP was compromised.

Do not rely on a promise that the recruiter will refund you after one more charge. That pattern can extend the loss.

Build one evidence folder

Save full-screen screenshots with date, time and account identity; chat exports; advertisement URLs; phone numbers; email headers; UPI IDs or bank details; transaction IDs; receipts; files sent to you; and a short timeline. Keep originals and record what identity documents you disclosed.

Worked timeline: “10:20 saw ad; 10:42 moved to WhatsApp; 11:05 asked for ₹750 registration; 11:12 paid through UPI reference X; 11:30 asked for ₹2,500 security; 11:40 stopped and called bank.” A compact chronology helps a reviewer understand escalation.

File the report carefully

Use the official portal address you typed or selected from a government source. Describe what was represented, what you relied on, what you paid or disclosed and what happened next. Keep the acknowledgement. Reporting does not guarantee immediate recovery, and KaamCheck India cannot track a police complaint, but an official record is different from a comment online.

Secure what was exposed

If you sent identity documents, watch for unexpected account, SIM or credit activity. If you installed an app or granted screen-sharing/accessibility permission, disconnect, remove the software, review permissions and seek trusted technical help. Never share an OTP with someone claiming to help recover money.

Match the evidence to the payment rail

UPI, bank transfer, card, wallet and cash deposit do not use identical dispute processes. Give the provider the transaction ID, beneficiary identifier, amount, time and reason you believe the transfer was induced by deception. Ask what formal reference will record the report. Do not assume deleting a chat, blocking the receiver or uninstalling an app cancels a completed transfer.

If several payments were made, list each separately. A single total can hide which beneficiary and time belong to which transaction. Preserve bank statements or app receipts as downloaded records when available, not only cropped screenshots.

Create a containment checklist

  • Bank or payment provider notified through an official channel.
  • 1930 contacted for financial cyber fraud and reference noted.
  • Portal report filed with a consistent chronology.
  • Passwords changed from a trusted device where exposure is possible.
  • Remote-access and unknown apps removed; permissions reviewed.
  • Family warned if their number, account or identity was included.
  • Evidence backed up without forwarding it publicly to strangers.

What not to do after reporting

Do not hire an unknown “recovery agent” who asks for another advance fee or claims private access to police or banking systems. Do not post full Aadhaar, account numbers or unredacted chats publicly in an attempt to warn others. Do not alter dates or recreate missing evidence as if it were original. Describe gaps honestly.

Follow-up expectations

Keep every acknowledgement and use the channel specified by the institution for follow-up. Different cases and jurisdictions move at different speeds. This publication cannot assess whether a complaint will result in a hold, refund, investigation or prosecution. If threats, stalking or immediate physical risk accompany the fraud, contact the relevant local emergency or police service rather than relying only on an online financial report.

FAQ

Should I confront the recruiter? Preserving evidence and preventing more loss are usually more useful than a prolonged argument.

Can KaamCheck file for me? No. Only the affected person or an authorised representative should use official channels with accurate details.

What if no money moved? Save the advertisement, block further contact and protect any data already shared; official portals may offer suspect-reporting options.

Editorial judgment

The useful response is procedural: reduce further loss, notify the payment rail, report through official channels and preserve a clean evidence trail. Give identifiers to relevant institutions and authorities before publicly naming an unverified individual.
